The man is depicted in profile, advancing toward the right. The sleeveless tunic, the visored helmet, the manica at the right arm, and especially the long lance (hasta) suggest that the gladiator is an eques. The graffito is partially abraded at the bottom; therefore, it is not possible to determine if the gladiator was originally depicted on a horse. The graffito is possibly to be read in relation to the two spectators in graffito DP54.1.","caption":"Drawing of a gladiator","writingStyleInEnglish":"Graffito/incised","property":{"englishPropertyName":"Basilica","italianPropertyName":"Basilica","insula":{"shortName":"Agora","fullName":"Agora","city":{"name":"Smyrna","pleiadesId":"550771"}},"propertyTypes":[{"name":"Basilica","description":""}],"numberOfGraffiti":325,"uri":"Smyrna/Agora/1","propertyName":"Basilica","propertyNumber":"1"},"figuralInfo":{"drawingTags":[{"name":"Gladiators","description":""}],"descriptionInLatin":"((:gladiator ad dext., eques))","descriptionInEnglish":"gladiator facing right, eques"},"trismegistosNumber":null,"uri":"https://ancientgraffiti.org/Graffiti/graffito/AGP-SMYDP0542","agpId":"AGP-SMYDP0542","citation":"AGP-SMYDP0542, The Ancient Graffiti Project, <https://ancientgraffiti.org/Graffiti/graffito/AGP-SMYDP0542> [accessed: 29 Apr 2026]","graffitoHeight":"4","graffitoLength":"11","pleiadesId":"550771","locationMetadataLink":"properties/Smyrna/Agora/1"}
